Cretaceous reservoirs in the Ladyfern area host initial marketable gas reserves of more than 3 TCF, and recoverable oil reserves of greater than 20 million barrels (Map 1). There is immense potential for new discoveries, and for adding reserves within established pools through systematic application of fundamental regional geology.
Exploration at Ladyfern has been driven by huge discoveries in the Slave Point Formation since 1999. Large land positions have been established, more than 100 deep wells have been drilled or are licensed, new seismic is being acquired, and new pipelines are now delivering more than 500 MMCF/D of gas. Many exploration strategists, however, are questioning how long the Slave Point alone can sustain this massive new infrastructure, and respond to rapidly-accelerating North American gas demand. Ladyfern itself is now in decline, leaving considerable capacity available in the new pipelines. Explorationists must look to other targets to sustain production volumes in the area.
Petrel Robertson Consulting Ltd. proposes to conduct a regional multidisciplinary exploration and development study of Cretaceous reservoirs in a area covering Twp. 85-93, Rge. 1-22W6 (Map 1). The project area adjoins Petrel’s regional studies at Buick Creek, Silver/Dahl, and Bivouac, and will build upon the regional geological framework established by these projects. Ladyfern encompasses both long-established pools which can serve as exploration/development templates, and wide-open exploration fairways.
We will focus on extending and integrating our mapping of: pre-Cretaceous valley systems, multiple stages of Gething valley fill, the older Buick Creek deltaic sandstone, and Bluesky estuarine valley fills and high-energy shoreface sandstones. We will also map and assess the Spirit River Formation, which produces gas in the southeast and to the northwest. Within each unit, we will characterize reservoir geology, hydrodynamics, major play types, and overall prospectivity.
Companies subscribing to Petrel Robertson’s study will gain a complete and clear understanding of the geology and hydrocarbon potential of the Cretaceous System over much of northeastern B.C. and northwestern Alberta. As a result, they will be able to integrate the Cretaceous with their mapping of deeper zones, and generate drillable prospects efficiently and economically.
Petrel's Background
Petrel Robertson has extensive mapping and exploration experience in northeastern British Columbia and northwestern Alberta. In the early 1990’s, we completed regional exploration assessments of the Devonian and Mississippian sections, augmented by the acquisition of several regional seismic datasets (Map 1). Since 1997, we have evaluated Cretaceous exploration and development potential at Buick Creek, Silver/Dahl, and Bivouac. These studies have delineated portions of a major pre-Cretaceous valley system, which exerts significant control on reservoir development in the underlying Buick Creek sandstone, and the overlying Gething and Bluesky formations. In addition, Petrel has undertaken exclusive consulting projects for various clients, applying our regional mapping to generation of specific play fairways and prospects.
The proposed Ladyfern study will be integrated with our existing mapping to provide a complete regional picture of Cretaceous deposition, hydrodynamics, and exploration and development potential.
