Study Methodology

Petrel Robertson’s fundamental approach is to construct a thorough geological synthesis by incorporating all available geological information. We study cores, well logs, and existing geological work, including the published literature and our own reports. We also consider drillstem test, production, and fluid analysis data, in order to relate hydrocarbon occurrences to the geology, and to document exploration plays and strategies.

The proposed study area contains about 3700 wells; more than 200 of these have been cored. Well logs from approximately 3000 wells will be analyzed to determine stratigraphic correlations and lithologies. Poor-quality log suites from older wells and some closely-spaced development wells will be excluded to make the project more manageable. Selected cores (about 140) will be logged for lithology, mineralogy, trace fossil content, and bedding contacts; then photographed and sampled for petrographic evaluation. All available test data will be evaluated on the basis of test reliability, fluid phase, fluid contacts, and the lateral continuity of pressure systems. Damaged and bypassed reservoir sections will be identified and reviewed.
