Regional Studies
Lower Cretaceous reservoirs in the Wild River area of west-central Alberta

Summary:
Location: T52-61, R19W5-27W5
Strata: Bluesky / Gething / Cadomin
Year of Study: 2007

Petrel Robertson Consulting Ltd.(PRCL) mapped and characterized Lower Cretaceous (Bluesky / Gething / Cadomin) reservoirs in the Wild River area of west-central Alberta, with the ultimate goal of understanding existing hydrocarbon production and future exploration and development potential. This report summarizes the work, with reference to supporting information including core logs, cross-sections, and maps. The study area encompasses Townships 52-61, and Ranges 19-27W5.

Methodology included acquiring well logs and scout ticket information from all wells penetrating the Bluesky/Gething section. Well control was updated in spring 2005 to include wells drilled in winter 2004/2005, and well information released up to that time. Final well count was approximately 1750 boreholes (not counting multiple events). Forty-five selected cores characterized productive reservoirs and illustrated regional and local stratigraphy. In order to establish regional stratigraphic correlations, regional cross-sections were constructed including as many cored wells as possible. Stratigraphic tops were picked for all wells, based on cross-section correlations. The characterization of each reservoir unit included gross isopach and net porous sand isopach mapping, interpretation of depositional environments and assessment of reservoir quality, based upon core descriptions, core analysis, and sample descriptions available from wellsite geology reports. A summary of development and an exploration assessment for each reservoir unit was undertaken.
