Year of Study: 1986
Introduction
A detailed analysis of the Mannville Group containing over 1,000 wells and 128 cores within a 56 township area centred around the Frog Lake Indian Reserve of east-central Alberta documents the major geological controls upon hydrocarbon entrapment.
On the basis of stratigraphy, the study area was split into northern and southern sectors. The stratigraphy of the northern sector is generally compatible with the subdivisions of the Cold Lake area. Only four units are recognized here: McMurray, Clearwater, Lower Grand Rapids and Upper Grand Rapids. In the southern sector, seven units are carried and the stratigraphic framework is generally compatible with the one employed in the Lloydminster area. The units recognized are approximately equivalent to the Dina, Cummings, Rex/Lloyd, General Petroleums, Sparky, Waseca and Colony/McLaren zones.
The basal units of both sectors (McMurray and Dina zones) are fluvial deposits which infill lows upon the underlying eroded Paleozoic surface. The upper three units of the northern sector represent thick deltaic lithofeldspathic sandstones, deposited in progressively more terrestrial environments as one proceeds up the section. Lower delta plain and barrier island deposits characterize the Clearwater Formation, mouth bar and distributary channel fills dominate the Lower Grand Rapids Formation and channel fills are the major deposits associated with the Upper Grand Rapids Formation. In the southern sector, the Cummings through Waseca zones represent transgressive-regressive cyclic shoreline sediments deposited in wave-dominated environments. These deposits are laterally truncated by rare channel fills formed of sandstones and mudrocks. The uppermost Mannville zone (Colony/McLaren) is characterized by thick linear deposits of fluvial channel fill sandstones and mudstones.
